Some people thrill to glamorous stars of the stage and industry, while others are brought to tears by war, plague, and poverty. It is a bustling era, wherein large vessels navigate busy sea routes and the power of steam gives birth to new technologies. I also get the feeling that the game's modernized but definitely throwback stylings are benefitting from a long-running wave of SNES-era nostalgia.The story takes place in Solistia, a land comprising an eastern and western continent divided by the sea.
The game itself is receiving sold reviews, even if an 84 on metacritic doesn't quite measure up to the staggering critical success of some of Nintendo's own software for the new system. A bunch of people tried the Persona series for the first time on Vita, myself included. In the case of Octopath Traveler, people had been excited about the prospect of a Switch exclusive JRPG for a little while, and there's something about the long, windy travels of the genre that seems particularly well-suited to mobile. It's a story we've heard before on the Switch in various different ways: companies seem to find themselves consistently surprised by how successful games are on the new system. It is less of a problem in the modern era, because of course there are theoretically infinite copies of Octopath Traveler available on the Nintendo Switch e-Shop, though some either don't quite have the connectivity to download it or just prefer physical copies.
